ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News

Turkey has ratified the Council of Europe’s Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse.

Parliament adopted the convention in a midnight gathering Nov. 25 to finalize the process prior to a public-awareness campaign that was launched in Rome that aims to raise awareness about sexual abuse or violence against children.

Turkish State Minister Selma Aliye Kavaf, who is responsible for women and family affairs, said Wednesday Turkey’s laws were adequate to protect its children, noting that the convention approved by Turkey was a major step forward in cooperation for the protection of children from all kinds of violence and abuse.

More than 40 countries have signed the Council of Europe’s convention, which came into effect on July 1. The convention aims to prevent sexual offenses against children, prosecute perpetrators and protect victims.

The convention tackles all forms of sexual violence against children, including abuse perpetrated within the family environment, child prostitution and pornography, coercing children into participating in pornographic performances, grooming and sex tourism.

The Council of Europe launched a pan-European campaign in Rome earlier this week to encourage ratification and implementation and raise public awareness.
