United States of America:

Tacoma Man Gets 9-Year Term For Sex Trafficking [USA, Washington]:  A 24-year-old Tacoma man was
sentenced to nine years in prison Thursday for human trafficking.  U.S. District Judge Robert J. Bryan also sentenced Lashad Alexander to three years of supervised release and imposed a $130,000 restitution fee.  Alexander pleaded guilty in February to forcing a 17-year-old girl to work for him as a prostitute.  He recruited the teen in 2005 and she worked for him until Lakewood police arrested Alexander in March 2010 after the girl called her brother for help, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.  Alexander occasionally hit the teen, forced her to hand over her earnings, helped her post sex advertisements on the Internet and bought condoms, motel rooms, cell phones and clothing, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.  [HSEC-3.10; Date: 30 September 2011; Source: http://www.thenewstribune.com/2011/09/30/1845849/tacoma-man-gets-9-

Authorities Say Human Smuggling Attempt Went Awry [USA, Texas]:  Part of a Starr County highway is open again after a human smuggling attempt ended in a major accident.  The tire on a pickup blew out Thursday, causing the vehicle to slam into a light pole and erupt into flames.  Twelve illegal immigrants were riding in the truck bed at the time of the impact.  Most of them suffered broken bones after being ejected but still ran into a nearby ranch.  A DPS helicopter helped lead authorities to the injured illegals.  They were rushed to hospitals; the search still on for the driver.  [HSEC-3.10; Date: 29 September 2011; Source:

Human Trafficking A Problem In USA, Northern Nevada:  A former UNR professor and IRS agent is under arrest for human trafficking -- and experts say it's a growing problem here in Northern Nevada. … The U.S. Attorney's office says this 58-year old Reno man, Kemp Shiffer, is charged with bringing a California woman into Nevada in order to prostitute her.  The retired IRS agent and former UNR professor is indicted for human trafficking.  Coincidentally on Wednesday, that indictment came down the same day UNR students
held a forum on campus on Human Trafficking.  Nevada Assemblyman from Las Vegas John Hambrick was one of the speakers.  "Last November you had 14, 15 year old girls who came to law enforcement seeking help and they were trafficked by someone from the Bay Area, so yes it is prevalent here," said Hambrick.  Beni Hernandez, who came in from Los Angeles to speak to students about her work with the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking, also says human trafficking is happening here.  "Definitely areas like Reno and Las Vegas where it's a major destination for tourists, you'll see individuals brought in for forced prostitution and forced labor," said Hernandez.  [HSEC-3.6; Date: 29 September 2011; Source:

"Innocence Lost" Sex Trafficking Task Force Rescues 3 Girls In SeaTac [USA, Washington]:  SeaTac
Police Captain Annette Louie confirmed this morning that SeaTac Sgt. Rich McMartin and his team participated in the joint police raid over the weekend that rescued three 15-year-old girls working as prostitutes in SeaTac.  As is often the case with underage sex workers, the three had been coerced into the trade by unscrupulous adults–an offense that puts convicts in a Federal penitentiary for at least 15 years, Louie points out.  The FBI's Innocence Lost Task Force, which is "aimed at addressing the growing problem of domestic sex trafficking of children in the United States," acted as the main coordinator of weekend stings in the greater Seattle area, including specific locations in Shoreline and SeaTac, according to Louie.

City Says No Babies Seized For Adoption [China]:  Authorities in a city in Hunan province, where family planning officials had been accused of infant trafficking, said an investigation had found no evidence of such allegations.  However, the Shaoyang city government handed out punishments to 12 civil servants, explaining they were found in serious violation of Party discipline or administrative rules. … The investigation, ordered by Zhou Qiang, Party chief of Hunan, followed a report in early May by Caixin Century magazine saying that nearly 20 infants in Shaoyang had been taken away by family lanning officials between 2002 and 2005.  The report said officials had accused some families of giving birth to more than one child or of illegally adopting "abandoned" children, and forcibly took those infants away.  China's family planning regulations strictly forbid couples from having more than one child without permission.  Residents who claimed their children were taken away told Caixin Century that officials sold the babies to welfare centers for at least 1,000 yuan [$155] each.  [HSEC-3.10; Date: 29 September 2011; Source:

Indonesian Police Detain Asylum Seekers:  Indonesian police have detained 61 presumed asylum seekers in East Java.  The travelers from Afghanistan and Iran were detained by police manning a routine checkpoint at Tuban in East Java.  The head of the local anti-people smuggling taskforce, Idzam Kaplale, says they were travelling in five vehicles.  He says some of the passengers had identity papers issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.  They are now being transferred to an immigration detention center.  Asylum seekers often gather in the region before boarding boats bound for Christmas Island.  The Australian-backed taskforce detained more than 2,000 people last year.  [HSEC-3.10; Date: 29 September 2011; Source: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-09-29/indonesian-police-detain-asylum-

Chinese Men Jailed For Human Trafficking [Vietnam]:  Two human traffickers were sentenced to five and six years' imprisonment each by the People's Court of northern border Ha Giang Province on Tuesday for forcing a woman into sex work in China.  The traffickers, including a 40-year-old local man and a 21- year-old Chinese man living in Yunnan Province, China, had deceived a local woman into travelling to Yunan with them in April and forced her to work as a sex worker against her will.  The woman later escaped with the help of Chinese police.  On court order, she will receive more than VND14 million [$680] in
compensation from the men.  [HSEC-3.10; Date: 29 September 2011; Source:
